Managing The FOD Load in my FOD*BOSS

Tips for maximizing the life cycle of your FOD*BOSS and minimizing wear.

Initial Use Of The FOD*BOSS

When you first start using the FOD*BOSS, you may be surprised at just how much it is picking up.  This is a good thing and simply reflects that our FOD*BOSS is the most-effective FOD sweeper available on the market.  However, we also sometimes have customers express surprise at just how much FOD was being missed by the sweeping technologies used before the FOD*BOSS.  Rest assured knowing that as you sweep an area each successive time, the amount of FOD collected will reduce.  This is again due to the effectiveness of the FOD*BOSS.

As a rule, we suggest that the FOD*BOSS does not carry any more than 6½ lb or 3 kg at any one time.

Weight management is the fundamental concept behind what we have called “Managing The FOD Load.”

The Four Simple Steps For Maximizing Your FOD*BOSS’s Life Cycle

The FOD*BOSS Ultimate is expected to last at least 4,500 miles (7,200 km) between replacements.  In some instances, they have lasted for as much as 6,200 miles (10,000 km).  To ensure you get as long a life as you can out of your FOD*BOSS, the following recommendations should guide your usage:

  1. Identify a well-defined area (e.g. a single taxiway or apron area) you wish to sweep and decide upon your approach to ensuring the entire surface is swept.FOD_BOSS emptying Runway sweeper

  2. Depending on the size of the area being swept, regularly check the amount of FOD that may be within the sweeper to ensure it doesn’t become overloaded. This is a judgment call and one that becomes easier as your experience grows. We recommend no more than 61/2 lb (3 kg) be allowed to collect within the sweeper before emptying.  Keeping the weight within your sweeper below this level minimizes the impact weight has on the friction between the sweeper and the tarmac surface.

  3. Always empty your sweeper in an area where you can easily clean up the FOD.

  4. Using a small broom and pan, transfer the FOD into a FOD bucket for subsequent sorting and identification.  This will be important for any reporting and analysis your FOD Management Plan requires.

Thank you for your interest in our FOD*BOSS® Air Force Sweeping System, and we hope these four simple steps ensure a long and valuable life for your FOD*BOSS.

It is strongly recommended you also sweep often and empty often!  Increasing the time between sweeps simply because you are finding less FOD in your sweeper is counterintuitive, but may negatively impact overall safety levels.
